Muiderslot Castle - also known as Amsterdam Castle Muiderslot - is one of the most famous castles in the Netherlands. The square castle with distinctive round corner towers and moat was founded by Floris V. shortly after 1285 and restored from 1895-1910. The interior of the castle mainly highlights the 17th century, the period when poet, writer and historian P.C. Hooft inhabited the castle.
Special activities are regularly organised in and around the castle, such as a dinner in the castle gardens or camping in the orchard. The castle museum is also perfect to visit with children!
Guided tour in and around the castle
During the free audio tour of about 45 minutes, beautiful objects and paintings tell the history of life at the castle in the Golden Age. The Tower Route audio tour is in Dutch and English and the Knight's Route audio tour is available in ten languages: Dutch, English, German, Spanish, French, Italian, Arabic, Russian, Hebrew and Mandarin.
Outside, one can enjoy the view of Muiden harbour and the vista of the former Zuiderzee. The plum orchard and 17th-century-style historic gardens are also worth a visit.
With children
For children aged 6 to 11, a treasure hunt is on sale at the box office (€2). Set off and complete the tasks. Sometimes you'll need a little help from an adult. The scavenger hunt is also a construction sheet: you can cut it out and fold it afterwards. That way, you can have your own model of the Muiderslot at home. Ask for the treasure hunt at the box office.
There is also a special (free) audio tour for children. How did they keep the enemy at bay? And what did they do when danger approached? You can pick up the free audio tour in the castle courtyard. The story lasts about 20 minutes and is available in Dutch and English.
There are special children's tours on Wednesday afternoons. Children have the opportunity to hold some 'old' objects themselves.
