Symphonic Concert Full of Energy and Colour

This concert takes you from vibrant city sounds to brand-new music bursting with boldness and vitality. An American in Paris reveals how George Gershwin transformed his visit to Paris into a sparkling musical impression, full of drive and charm. The program also features music by composer Jesse Passenier, who brings jazz and symphonic music together in a surprising way.

In Piano Concerto No. 1 “Levensdrift” (Vitality), layered harmonies and propulsive rhythms radiate inspiration and energy. Vibraphone & Marimba Concerto No. 1 “Becoming the Colour” places the vibraphone and marimba centre stage, with sounds shifting between bright, warm and powerful. Two soloists partly improvise, adding tension and spontaneity.

Under the direction of conductor Arjan Tien, the students of the VU Orchestra showcase their musicality and dedication. Pianist Kari Ikonen and percussionist Vincent Houdijk promise a concert filled with colour, energy and surprises.
