Fort Nieuwersluis lies between the meadows and the waters of the Vecht – a hidden gem with a rich history. Built in 1880 as part of the Dutch Water Lines UNESCO World Heritage, the fort served as a strategic defence between Utrecht and Amsterdam. Soldiers kept watch here, ammunition depots were stored, and the Netherlands was protected by the water as an ally.
Today, the fort exudes tranquillity, but still breathes character and history. With its robust walls, green roofs and atmospheric courtyards, Fort Nieuwersluis is a place where past and present come together. A unique location to discover, meet and enjoy. It is an ideal stopover during your walk or bike ride through the Vecht region. Enjoy a cup of coffee or tea, a homemade slice of cake, a delicious lunch or a tasty snack (platter) in the fort or on the terrace.
UNESCO World Heritage
Fort Nieuwersluis is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. On 26 July 2021, the World Heritage Committee decided to grant the New Dutch Waterline World Heritage status. Together with the Defence Line of Amsterdam, which has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1996, they form the Dutch Waterlines.
Civil Defence Command Post
During the Cold War, Fort Nieuwersluis was set up as a command post for the Civil Defence (BB). This was a civil protection organisation, staffed by volunteers, whose job was to warn the population in the event of a nuclear war or other disasters. Atomic-proof command posts were built throughout the country. Here, volunteers practised alerting the population during an attack with atomic, biological or chemical weapons. They also trained in coordinating assistance to victims.
