One of the most famous eye-catchers along the Vecht is country estate Rupelmonde. This beautiful 17th-century stately home was founded by the Fleming Anthony van Ghesel. He named it after the city of Rupelmonde, located near Antwerp. Over the centuries, Rupelmonde grew from a modest manor with a sober appearance into an eye-catcher with allure.

Through the centuries
After an extensive renovation in 1768, commissioned by Jacob Berthon, the outside took on a more alluring appearance. Both the exterior and the interior were embellished with elements in Louis XIV and XV style. The coach house dates from the 18th century and is a typical example of Dutch Baroque. It was converted into a residence in 1924.

Special features
A characteristic feature of this country house is the turret (the so-called 'attic') in the middle of the building. This decoration also served as protection for when people wanted to enjoy the view from the roof. This attic was also made in Louis XV style, as was the jetty's framework.

Another eye-catcher on the facade are the two alliance coats of arms. The shield bearers on the left and right are Neptune and Mercury, referring to the builder's source of prosperity.

Surroundings of Rupelmonde
The house is surrounded by a landscaped park from the 19th century. The back of the house faces the river Vecht with a beautifully decorated facade, the entrance is on the side of the Rijksstraatweg. Rupelmonde is in good company with the country estates Over Holland and Sterreschans nearby.

Not open to the public
The house is a private residence and therefore not open to the public. So the best way to admire the country house is from the water during a boat trip (for example with the Bike Boat) or during a bike ride or walk along the Vecht.
